Alloway Applauds Passage of Fiscally Responsible Budget

HARRISBURG –Senator Richard Alloway II (R-33) today supported Senate passage of a fiscally responsible, sustainable state budget that will not increase state taxes.

The $27.656 billion spending plan represents a modest 1.4-percent increase over the current year’s spending. The budget restores some of the most painful cuts the governor requested in February for education and vital social services.

"The spending plan approved today demonstrates a commitment to controlling state spending without having a negative impact on the core functions of government," Alloway said. "My main concern was enacting a budget that provided the services local residents need most without dipping further into taxpayers’ pockets. This bill accomplishes both of these goals."

Senate Bill 1466 fully restores funding for Pennsylvania’s state-related universities and State System of Higher Education schools. In return, the presidents of these institutions have agreed to keep tuition increases below the Consumer Price Index.

The bill also includes more than $149 million in additional support for local school districts over Governor Corbett’s request in February. It increases funding for the Education Improvement Tax Credit program by $25 million. The EITC offers the business community a 75 percent tax credit for contributions made to scholarship and educational organizations, enabling parents to choose the best educational setting for their children.
