Alloway Urges Boaters to Use Caution on Waterways, Wear Lifejackets

HARRISBURG – Senator Richard Alloway II (R-33) is urging boaters to take the proper precautions on waterways and wear a lifejacket to prevent needless tragedies.

According to the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, 80 percent of boating deaths in the state are the result of boaters not wearing a life jacket or personal flotation device. Across the state last year, 22 boaters died as a result of recreational boating accidents, and only three of them were wearing a life jacket or personal flotation device (PFD) at the time of the accident.

"Even the most experienced boaters can run into unexpected trouble on the water," said Alloway, who chairs the Senate Game and Fisheries Committee. "Wearing a lifejacket is the best way to avoid becoming the victim of a boating tragedy."

Nationwide, 700 people die annually in boating-related accidents.

More information on boating safety is available online at the PFBC website at fishandboat.com.
