Heating Assistance Grant Applications Available Now

HARRISBURG – Families who are struggling with rising fuel costs can apply now for the state’s Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), according to Senator Richard Alloway II (R-33).

LIHEAP provides grants to help low-income families pay heating bills. Applications for cash grants are available now by contacting one of the following county assistance offices: Adams County (717) 334-6241 or toll-free 1-800-638-6816, Franklin County (717) 264-6121 or toll-free 1-800-921-8839, or York County (717) 771-1100 or toll-free 1-800-991-0929.

Individuals with Internet access may also apply electronically via the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Access to Social Services (COMPASS) website at www.compass.state.pa.us.

"This program offers some much-needed relief from rising utility costs for many families who are struggling to make ends meet," Alloway said. "LIHEAP was expanded last year to provide help to more Pennsylvanians, so I would encourage district residents to learn more about this valuable program."

LIHEAP applicants will be required to submit the following information:

  • Names of people in household
  • Social Security numbers for all household members
  • Proof of income for all household members
  • Recent heating bill.

LIHEAP also provides crisis grants for families who experience heating emergencies, such as a broken furnace, fuel shortage or utility termination. The crisis grant program is scheduled to open on January 4, 2010.

Cash grants of up to $300 and crisis grants of up to $800 are available through LIHEAP. The amount of each grant is dependent on income, household size, type of heating fuel and region of the state. A family of four can earn up to $33,075 and still be eligible for the program.

Alloway said that many utility companies offer assistance plans in addition to LIHEAP, so consumers should check with their heating fuel and electricity supplier for details.
