Alloway Sponsors Resolution Recognizing Tourette Syndrome Awareness
HARRISBURG – Senator Richard Alloway II (R-33) supported Senate passage last
week of a resolution recognizing May 15 to June 15 as Tourette Syndrome
Awareness Month.
Tourette Syndrome, or TS, is an inherited, neurobiological disorder that
causes those affected to have involuntary motor and vocal tics. A tic can be any
movement or vocalization, from eye blinking and throat clearing to complex
movements like jumping or shouting words and phrases. Because these tics are out
of the individual's control, they can make even everyday activities extremely
difficult.
Senate Resolution 118 established Tourette Syndrome Awareness Month to
support a greater understanding of the disorder.
"Tourette Syndrome can make life difficult for those affected because others
may misunderstand the involuntary tics," Alloway said. "I am hopeful that this
resolution will help more people understand this disorder to bring greater
awareness and acceptance."
"Senator Alloway's support means a lot to the clients we serve," said Sherrie
Sponseller, Administrator of the Pennsylvania Tourette Syndrome Association.
"The Senate has taken a great step in promoting awareness of Tourette Syndrome
with their support of this resolution."
